Botany Museum

The present outstanding status of Botany museum is due to the outcome of strenuous work of the past 8 years. The introduction of the UGC program has helped in expanding the museum on all dimensions.

Most of the specimens in the museum were collected during various botanical tours by the staff members and the students of the Botany Department. Very rare specimens like marine algae from Kanyakumari, Idinthakarai, Paanjal, Manapad, Rameshwaram, and Bryophytes and Pteridophytes from Vathalmalai, Kolimalai and Kodaikanal. Herbarium sheets of valuable RET plants were collected from different parts of Tamil Nadu are displayed.

A number of local plants having medicinal importance are mounted in glass jars with their botanical, vernacular identified as per Flora of the Presidency of Madras and Flora of Tamil Nadu. Other important economic plant products like cereals, pulses, spices, fruits, vegetables, etc., are displayed as a part of the academic curriculum.

Seed Banks:

Germplasm is stored as seeds of various genotypes. Seed conservation is quite easy, relatively safe, and needs minimum space. Seeds were classified, on the basis of their storability into two major groups.

Active Collection:

Seeds are stored at 10°C temperature and the seed moisture is between 5 and 8%.  The storage is for a medium duration, i.e., 10-15 years.  These collections are used for the evaluation, multiplication, and distribution of the accessions.

Working Collections:

Seeds are stored for 3-5 years at 5-10°C and they usually contain about 10% moisture.  Such materials are regularly used in crop improvement programs.
